Let’s assume the assertion is true, and that over the next few years, business websites will be replaced with content posted to third-party platforms.
I discuss the downside to companies if they rely exclusively on third parties in this post, but here I shall focus on what the last business website might look like.
As the budget to create a website falls, the need to produce the site as quickly and cheaply as possible grows. A business website under these conditions will end up being an afterthought.
It will be hard to read, although, ironically, it will probably be easier to use than many corporate sites currently “gracing” the web.
These final websites will lack originality and creative flair as the budget and the talent are directed toward the creation of content destined to be hosted and controlled elsewhere.
The final days of the business website will add to the speed with which the genre circles history’s cleansing drain.
Such sites will continue to be ignored by Google, and thus, also hasten Google’s demise as the search engine’s usefulness continues to plummet.
Meanwhile, somewhere out there, an enterprising marketing manager will fly in the face of conventional wisdom, and create something truly unique. Something none of their competitors have.
Something retro.
That person will produce a useful business website the likes of which nobody has seen in years.
I suspect the last business website won’t be the end, but rather, more akin to reincarnation.
